Grants, loans, rebates available

The quest for energy saving and a green environment has stimulated many world governments to concessions for those who adopt conservation practices.

Heat pump incentives are available in the U.S. Canada, The United Kingdom, Australia and many parts of Europe. The list grows.

In the United States, the federal government, many states and a number of municipal authorities offer homeowner rebates, tax incentives and grants to support installing ground source heat pumps like those in the NHP suite of units. The feds allow a personal tax credit, including installation of renewals. This amounts to 10% of cost of building envelope improvements or 100% for qualified energy property (heating, cooling, water heaters). The maximum incentive varies: $500 maximum for all energy property and envelope improvements for all tax years. Equipment must be new and in compliance with all applicable performance and safety standards.

In Canada, federal ecoEnergy grants are available to homeowners who complete approved energy efficiency retrofits. Low-rise residential rental properties may also qualify. The amount is based on the nature of the retrofits that embrace more efficient heating system, like a NHP geothermal heat pump.

Replacement of an existing heating with a geothermal heat pump can draw a $3,500 grant. The maximum grant available for a retrofit is $5,000. An assessment by an NRCan-licensed advisor is required. For federal data click: http://www.geosmartenergy.com/rebates.html

Provincial incentives vary:

In British Columbia, the government offers a sales tax exemption until March 31, 2009 for ENERGY STAR qualified residential forced air furnaces or boilers (gas-fired and oil-fired), air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps. This rebate is valid if the system is purchased or leased for residential purposes. Some restrictions apply.

In Saskatchewan, its EnerGuide For Houses retrofit grant has been upgraded and extended until March 31, 2011. Participants also qualify for the ecoENERGY Retrofit Initiative introduced by Ottawa on April 1, 2007. The EnerGuide program provides for a provincial grant of up to $5,000 on upgrades to your home. A provincial sales tax exemption is available for qualifying ENERGY STAR residential furnaces, boilers and heat pumps.

In Manitoba, the Manitoba Hydro offers homeowners Earth Power loans of up to $20 000 at a interest rate of 4.9% (initial 5 year fixed term). This covers the higher cost of installing a geothermal heat pump, compared to a conventional heating and cooling system. Under the loan, the monthly financing cost of installing a geothermal heat pump rather than a conventional system is eased.

In Ontario, a home energy retrofit program has been created. It provides homeowners with grants of up to $5,000 for home energy improvements and mirrors the federal ecoENERGY program. This makes resident eligible for an additional $3,500 for the installation of a qualifying geothermal system.

For more information click on the Ontario Ministry of Energy logo. A retail sales tax rebate is available on qualifying geothermal equipment to January 1, 2010.

Other provinces — Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, PEI, Quebec, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon Territory — have not yet brought in their own programs but the federal ecoEnergy option should be considered for ground heat jobs.
